Collective identities are widely understood as emerging crucially in the demarcation from an outgroup Other. This article will discuss the current state of the European Union, the attempts to create a positive identity based on shared values and a common history, and, particularly, the danger of the emergence of a negative identity due to the hitherto failure of the EU's identity project. The guiding
question will be: Is the European Union likely to create a negative Other and what will it look like?
