Individual sensitivities to environmental stressors are seen as relevant variables which moderate the relationship between the amount of a stressor and the stress response. Within the domain of environmental stress research it turned out that the individual sensitivity to noise as well as the individual sensitivity to odours moderates to an equal extent the individual annoyance reaction to traffic noise. Starting from this observation it is supposed that individuals do not differ in various sensitivities to different stressors, but in the extent of how they monitor their environment.
