The work of the German poet and philosopher Karoline von Giinderrode (1780-1806) is still largely unknown in Italy. The tragic circumstances of her death and its mythologization in novel form by Bettina von Arnim have contributed to obscuring the literary and philosophical value of her work. The short story Geschichte eines Braminen , published in 1805 under the pseudonym Tiann in Sophie la Roche's magazine Herbsttage , is a fundamental testimony to Giinderrode's stylistic originality and is of particular interest in the context of the mythical image of India in Romantic culture. Through the initiatory confessions of the protagonist, India is shown to be the home of mankind's oldest religious revelation, whose fundamental idea is that of the divine character of nature as the embodiment of the Absolute in the physical world. This paper offers the Italian translation of the tale, along with a historical-critical introduction aimed at contextualizing the work within the framework of German Orientalism.
