The purpose of the current work is the analysis of the influence of compaction on thermal-sprayed coatings. Due to the porosity and the poor surface quality of thermal sprayed coatings, an additional process step is necessary to compact the coating and to increase the surface quality with the result of a complex deformation behavior of the coating. In a first step different mean-field homogenization methods are presented which are compared to FE-results from microstructural images. The discussed thermal sprayed coatings are multiphase systems consisting of a metal-matrix composite with pores. The behavior of the material is accounted for by using a Johnson-Cook material model formulation for the ductile metal matrix. Finally the results are projected on the macroscopic level via homogenization and the concept of a representative volume element where the plastic behavior is analyzed.
