Mg-alloys containing RE additions are promising candidates for structural applications, as they combine low density with high strength, which is important for lightweight construction. Medical applications, like bone screws and nails, benefit from their moderate corrosion rate. All these components are exposed to bending, more or less influenced by corrosion. In this study the Mg-lOGd-xNd (x=0,l,2 wt.%) were subjected to solution heat treatment to increase ductility and to reduce the dendritic microstructure. Plates of 110×20×6 mm3 in size were tested by three-point bending with a deformation speed of 1 mm/min. Crack growth is discussed using light microscopy and correlated to bending stress - outer strain curves. Crack propagation is mostly found transgranular and interacts with twinning. Double and secondary twinning occurs near the crack path in appropriately oriented grains. Corroded samples after pre-bending show an increase in yield strength but reduced toughness. Cracked samples show a strong reduction in flexural strength after corrosion.
