Comparison of modeling approaches based on the microstructure of thermally sprayed coatings

In this paper different modeling approaches are introduced and compared to predict the macroscopic behavior in thermally arc-sprayed coatings. The first homogenization approach is introduced in Klusemann (2010) for the modeling of the material behavior of two-phase composites motivated by thin-layer-type microstructures. The basic idea is to idealize a thin-layered microstructure as a first-order laminate. Such thin-layered microstructures occur, e.g., in arc-sprayed WC-FeCSiMn coatings. In the second approach a finite-element model of the experimentally obtained microstructure is used. Such models are received by discretization of the coating micrographs coming from the Scanning-Electron-Microscopy (SEM). It is shown that for arc-sprayed coatings the use of this homogenization approach leads to similar mechanical behavior as obtained by an explicit discretization of the microstructure at which the calculation time is much less. Furthermore a comparison of the two approaches with respect to a simulation of a roller burnishing process is shown.
